Taking the Public Out of Public Broadcasting

About a week ago, Republican Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina wrote an op-ed in the Washington Examiner titled, “Let NPR fend for itself on the market.”  You can read the full piece here.

The NPR program On the Media reported on DeMint’s suggestion, asking “in a time of reckless deficit spending, should government money for public broadcasting, however small, get the ax?”

This issue closely mirrors the debate over federal funding for the arts, which is even more hotly contested in a time of economic crisis and after the midterm elections.
